New Ambulance for
Exmoor Search and Rescue Team
One of the things we love about making campervan conversions is that you never know what you are going to get next. Being asked to make a Search and Rescue Ambulance was no exception!
We were contacted earlier this year by Ian Lee, Trustee of Exmoor Search and Rescue Team, based in South Molton, Devon. They were looking for a new rescue ambulance to replace one of their ageing Landrovers and, having known Tony for several years, knew that Autohaus were the right choice to do the work.
Whilst they already have four ambulances, including two Landrover, a Toyota Highlux and a Renault Master, none of the vehicles currently allow carriage of a loaded stretcher and so this was top of the list of requirements for the new ambulance.
The vehicle of choice was a VW T6 140PS 4Motion Transporter with High Top and the conversion incorporated a number of features including:
- Space for patient on full stretcher.
- Flexible seating for 4 rescue team members plus a driver. The layout was also designed allowing rear seats to be rotated into a rear facing position allowing a medic to tend to the patient.
- Storage units along one side of the vehicle to store a combination of rescue and medical equipment including oxygen and gas/air containers.
Ian popped in to see us last week with fellow rescue teammate, Lionel Murphy, for a photo opportunity with Tony outside the Autohaus workshop. It was a great opportunity to see the ambulance with its sign writing in place (provided by AP Signs in Braunton) and to hear what an asset it’s been to the team over the past months. Already it’s been used in 12 real-life search and rescue scenarios, plus regular training sessions with the team and trainees.
“The ambulance has been excellent” remarked Ian. “The VW is a much easier vehicle to drive, plus the 4 wheel drive will allow us to continue our resource to the police during snow and inclement weather.”
When asked how they found working with Autohaus, Ian said, “It was easy. We told Tony what we needed, we placed the order and we received exactly what we asked for!”
The Exmoor Search & Rescue Team would like to thank the people of North Devon and West Somerset for their donations to enable us to purchase this new vehicle.
About The Exmoor Search & Rescue Team
The rescue team, consisting of 30 trained volunteers and 8 trainees, cover an enormous area from Bude to Crediton and up to Bridgwater. They provide a valuable resource to the Police in the search for missing persons or extraction of people (and bodies!) from difficult locations. They also help out across the country when emergencies exist, recently providing support during the flooding in York.
Whilst a charity they receive no funding from the government and rely entirely upon donations and the support of their volunteers. If you would like to find out more or to provide a donation you can visit the Exmoor Search and Rescue Team website.
