After little or no training, men and women descended upon the beach with their finely tuned rafts with the express intention of being the first to make it across the bay to the harbour. Shortly after arriving it seems this intention was somewhat lost and as the starting flare was fired commotion ensued.

The Happy Campers team from Autohaus had decided this year to ditch the caravan and go for a more streamline and lightweight raft. Designed by our very own Tony Payne using his past knowledge of raft building this raft featured a projected ‘Two Tonne Displacement’ (we think he just heard that somewhere). It was clear shortly after launch that Tony has missed a decimal point in his calculations as the raft settled itself quite nicely a foot below the surface! Just as well his skills lie in building VW Campervan Conversions and not boats we say!

However, the weather and tide were on their side this year and before long the rafts began making headway across the bay (bar a few that sunk or couldn’t get off the beach).

The results of the race are a little unclear to us at this stage. Whoever won the race was clearly riding a superior craft (and had clearly taken the race far too seriously) as they quickly disappeared from view and arrived at the harbour long before our cameraman Jamie could run the distance! [Edit: Thanks to all the people driving cars who ignored his requests to thumb a lift to the harbour to catch the winners arrive]

The Happy Campers finally made it to the harbour amidst accusations of people not having paddled hard enough, Tony having been a bit bossy, Neil having been a bit lazy and team members complaining they’d been left behind on the beach!

In the end though it was a great day out for everyone involved and the RNLI collected some much needed money to support their role in saving lives of people silly enough to go out on the sea on makeshift rafts made from plastic bottles strapped together with ladders!

The race takes place on Sunday 26th August so come and join us with the family for a fun day out. The race starts around 1.30pm from Minehead beach (opposite Butlins) and crosses the bay to the harbour (hopefully!). There is entertainment throughout the day and a fireworks display at 9.30pm.

Well, you know how it is… the sun was shining, the sea was beckoning, so we decided to drive it down to the harbour side in Minehead and take a few photos of the campervan conversion whilst basking in this wonderful sunshine we’re having. Come on… you can’t really blame us can you?!
